Good Combolands building placement preserves future trigger space. Read the procedural island before committing, identify which tiles are scarce, and position a building so it can participate in more than one later connection when possible. Current patch notes also confirm one explicit restriction: v1.0.4 fixed the ability to build a Plateau on top of another Plateau.

Read terrain before cards

The map is procedurally generated, so every run presents a different spatial constraint. Mark narrow edges, central hubs and open regions before using a uniquely flexible tile. A legal placement is not automatically a useful long-term placement.

Potions can manipulate the map, and upgrades can manipulate building behavior. Keep those possibilities in mind without assuming a specific potion or upgrade will appear. Your first layout should remain functional even when the ideal support tool does not arrive.

Preserve connection points

Buildings can create cascading combos, so empty neighboring or in-range spaces have future value. Prefer placements that leave multiple useful continuations open. Avoid surrounding a key trigger too early unless the current effect specifically rewards it.

The exact meaning of adjacent, nearby or in range depends on the current card text. Do not apply one example to every building. The adjacency guide explains that distinction and labels historical examples.

Use previews with version awareness

Placement previews help compare immediate outcomes, but launch updates corrected several scoring previews and triggers. When a preview and result disagree, record the build, card text and surrounding tiles. Compare that evidence with official patch notes before treating the mismatch as a strategy rule.

Version 1.0.4 specifically mentions Plateau placement and interactions involving Stockpile, Sawmill and Manufacturer. Those examples show why exact placement claims need a version label. A workaround from v1.0.2 may be actively harmful in v1.0.4.

A placement decision checklist

  • Is this tile required by another visible building?
  • How many future trigger positions remain after placement?
  • Does the building need direct adjacency or a broader range?
  • Can the two guild pools both use the remaining space?
  • Is a map-changing potion worth saving for a harder constraint?
  • Does the current preview match the written effect?
