For your first Combolands run, choose two guilds, inspect the procedural island before placing anything, and build around repeatable trigger space rather than chasing one large preview number. The game is designed around short runs, but the important decisions compound quickly. Learn the placement language first, then add upgrades, potions, councillors and heirlooms only when they support the board you actually have.

Current-version boundary: the release loop is verified, but old Demo prices, unlock thresholds and reward values are not treated as fixed v1.0.4 facts.

Step 1: Read the island

The island is procedurally generated, so your useful terrain and available expansion lines can change from run to run. Before placing the first building, identify constrained edges, central connection points and spaces that could support more than one future trigger. This prevents an early building from sealing off a stronger chain.

Do not assume every effect uses the same definition of nearby. A card may care about direct adjacency, a broader range, a terrain condition or another specific trigger. Read the current card language and use the placement preview, while remembering that launch patches corrected several preview and trigger issues.

Step 2: Understand the guild pair

Each run asks you to pick two of seven guilds. That creates 21 possible pairings, but it does not prove that one pair is always strongest. For a first run, focus on whether the two visible pools create understandable, repeatable interactions rather than trying to copy an unsupported tier list.

Ask three questions: do both guilds value the same scarce spaces, does one provide setup while the other provides payoff, and can the pair still function when the island is awkward? The complete current building pools are not publicly documented, so your in-game draft remains the final source of truth.

Step 3: Place for chains, not isolated value

The official description makes cascading combos central to Combolands. Treat each placement as a node in a chain: what does it trigger now, what could trigger it later, and which empty spaces must stay open? A slightly smaller immediate gain can be correct when it creates several future connections.

After placing, compare the actual result with the preview. Version 1.0.3 and v1.0.4 fixed multiple scoring previews and trigger relationships. If a guide describes behavior that contradicts the current build, prefer the current build and official patch record.

Step 4: Spend flexibility deliberately

Rerolls, removals, upgrades and potions exist to improve a plan, not to replace one. Preserve flexible tools until they solve a concrete bottleneck: an unusable draw, a terrain conflict, a missing bridge in a trigger chain, or a reward that does not fit the run. Exact costs and availability can vary by progression and version, so this guide does not publish old Demo prices.

Potions are officially described as a way to manipulate the map. Historical Demo notes mention several specific effects, but those examples are not presented as a complete release-build list. Check the current item text before using a historical description as a rule.

Step 5: Treat milestones and quests as choices

Council quests are alternative mini-goals within a run. Choose one when its objective aligns with actions your city already wants to take; forcing an unrelated goal can consume space or resources that your main score plan needs. Patch v1.0.4 also fixed reward-blueprint behavior for some quests, so current results should not be judged by a pre-fix report.

Milestones and unlocks shape longer progression, but their exact thresholds were adjusted during development. Record what your release build shows rather than using a number from an old video. The milestone page keeps historical observations separate from confirmed facts.

Your first-run checklist

  1. Inspect the island before the first placement.
  2. Pick two guilds whose visible cards create understandable interactions.
  3. Preserve open connection points for later triggers.
  4. Verify previews and card text in the current build.
  5. Use rerolls, upgrades and potions to solve specific problems.
  6. Pursue council quests only when they fit the city plan.
  7. Review the finished run and identify which spaces created or blocked chains.
